The procedure
What are implant-retained dentures?
An implant-retained denture (also called a snap-on denture or overdenture) is a removable prosthesis that clips onto dental implants using precision attachments. Unlike conventional dentures that rely on adhesive paste and suction, implant-retained dentures lock into place and stay put during eating, speaking, and laughing.
The standard configuration uses 2 implants per arch with Locator or ball attachments. The implants are placed in the anterior region of the jaw where bone is typically densest. The denture snaps onto these attachments with a satisfying click and can be removed for cleaning. Retention force is adjustable and replacement inserts are available from any dentist.
For patients who want better retention than conventional dentures but are not candidates for (or do not wish to invest in) a full fixed All-on-4 prosthesis, implant-retained dentures offer an excellent middle ground. Dramatically improved function and confidence. At a fraction of the cost of fixed alternatives.

Common questions
Implant-retained denture FAQs
What is an implant-retained denture?
An implant-retained denture is a removable denture that clips onto 2 or more dental implants using precision attachments (ball, Locator, or bar). Unlike conventional dentures that rely on adhesive and suction, implant-retained dentures snap firmly into place and do not slip, rock, or fall out during eating or speaking.
How many implants do I need for a snap-on denture?
A minimum of 2 implants per arch is the standard for a snap-on overdenture. The lower jaw typically needs 2 implants, while the upper jaw may benefit from 4 due to lower bone density and the palate. Your surgeon will recommend the right number based on your CBCT scan and bone assessment.
Can I eat normally with implant-retained dentures?
Yes. Implant-retained dentures restore approximately 80% of natural biting force, compared to 20 to 30% with conventional dentures. Patients routinely report being able to eat foods they had avoided for years, including apples, corn on the cob, and steak. Soft diet only for the first 2 to 3 weeks after implant placement while the surgical sites heal.
How long do implant-retained dentures last?
The implants themselves can last a lifetime with proper care. The denture prosthesis typically needs relining every 3 to 5 years and replacement every 8 to 10 years due to normal wear. The attachment components (O-rings or nylon inserts) are consumables replaced annually by your local dentist.
What is the difference between snap-on dentures and All-on-4?
Snap-on dentures are removable: you take them out for cleaning. They use 2 implants and cost less. All-on-4 is a fixed (non-removable) full arch that uses 4 implants and a permanently screwed-in prosthesis. All-on-4 offers a more natural feel but requires more implants and a higher investment. Your surgeon can help you decide based on your clinical picture and goals.
